Maths

At Newlands Primary Academy, we teach mathematics using the NCETM Teaching for Mastery approach, which enables all children to develop a deep, secure and long-lasting understanding of mathematical concepts. We believe that every child can achieve success in mathematics through high-quality teaching, careful sequencing and appropriate challenge.

Lessons are designed to build understanding step by step, ensuring children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills alongside conceptual understanding. Through whole-class teaching, pupils explore mathematical ideas together, using discussion, practical resources and visual representations to help them make connections and deepen their thinking.

Our mastery curriculum is underpinned by the NCETM’s Five Big Ideas: coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation. These principles help children understand not only how mathematics works, but why it works, giving them the confidence to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Through our mathematics curriculum, we aim to develop resilient, confident and enthusiastic mathematicians who can reason, explain and solve problems effectively, preparing them for future learning and everyday life.
