At Newlands Primary Academy, our PSHE curriculum, myHappymind is designed to equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead healthy, safe and successful lives. We believe that personal development is just as important as academic achievement, and our curriculum supports children to become confident, resilient and responsible members of society who have a good understanding about relationships and how to interact with others.
Through a carefully planned programme of learning, pupils explore key themes including health and wellbeing, relationships, online safety, diversity, equality, economic wellbeing and citizenship. Children are encouraged to discuss important issues, reflect on their values and experiences, and develop the confidence to make informed and positive choices.
Our PSHE curriculum promotes respect, kindness and inclusion, helping children to understand and celebrate differences while developing positive relationships with others. We provide opportunities for pupils to develop their emotional literacy, communication skills and self-awareness, enabling them to navigate challenges and contribute positively to their communities.
Enhanced by our myHappymind programme, assemblies, enrichment opportunities and wider personal development offer, our PSHE curriculum prepares children for life in modern Britain and supports them to thrive both in school and beyond.
This is supported by our wellbeing programme, taught through the myHappymind programme, a whole-school approach to mental health, wellbeing and personal development. Grounded in science and research, myHappymind helps children understand how their brains work, develop positive habits and build the skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
The programme is organised into five modules: Meet Your Brain, Celebrate, Appreciate, Relate and Engage. Through these modules, children learn about emotional regulation, character strengths, gratitude, positive relationships, resilience and goal setting. These skills help pupils build confidence, self-esteem and a strong sense of wellbeing.
Lessons provide children with opportunities to discuss their feelings, understand themselves and others, and develop strategies to manage challenges positively. We encourage pupils to become kind, respectful and responsible members of their community while developing the knowledge and skills needed to make informed choices about their health, relationships and future aspirations.
Through our curriculum, we aim to ensure that every child feels valued, supported and empowered to be the very best version of themselves, both now and in the future.
