At Newlands Primary Academy, reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across all subjects and is fundamental to children’s future success. Our aim is to develop confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers who enjoy reading for both pleasure and purpose.

We teach phonics through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. Through daily, systematic phonics lessons, children learn the knowledge and skills needed to become accurate and fluent readers, while regular reading practice sessions help to develop confidence, fluency and comprehension.

We teach reading using the CUSP Reading curriculum, which is built around high-quality, ambitious texts. Through explicit teaching of vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension, pupils develop a deep understanding of what they read and learn to think critically about a wide range of literature. The carefully sequenced curriculum enables children to build their knowledge, language and understanding over time, ensuring strong progression throughout their primary years. 

We foster a love of reading by exposing children to a rich range of books, authors, poets and genres, helping every pupil to see themselves as a reader and develop a lifelong enjoyment of literature.

Our expectation is that all of our children read at home with families at least four times a week and record this on Boom Reader.
