Kingfishers Autism Resource Provision

Our Kingfishers Autism Resource Provision is designed for children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and those with communication and interaction needs that fit this profile, who require specialist support within a mainstream primary school setting. All children placed in Kingfishers have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and benefit from tailored support alongside opportunities to learn and socialise within their mainstream classroom.

Our aim is to provide a nurturing, structured and autism-friendly environment where every child feels understood, valued and supported. We work to develop communication, independence, social understanding and emotional regulation, enabling children to access a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum while building confidence and preparing for the future.

How the Kingfishers Provision Works

Children in Kingfishers access both the Resource Provision and their mainstream class through a personalised timetable designed around their individual strengths and needs.

• Children who are able to access learning successfully within the mainstream classroom may spend a greater proportion of their day with their class. They access the Resource Provision for specialist support, social communication programmes, sensory regulation and targeted interventions.

• Children who require a higher level of support may spend more time within Kingfishers. The provision offers a calm, predictable and highly structured environment, supported by visual routines and personalised strategies. These children also participate in mainstream lessons, educational visits and wider school activities when appropriate to their individual needs and developmental goals.

Support and Interventions

Every child in Kingfishers has an individual support plan that identifies their strengths, communication preferences, sensory needs, interests and strategies that help them feel regulated and ready to learn.

Children may receive a range of personalised interventions, including:

• Social communication and interaction programmes
• Emotional regulation and self-advocacy support
• Structured language and communication activities
• Sensory regulation opportunities and planned sensory breaks
• Support with developing friendships, social understanding and play skills
• Targeted academic support delivered through approaches that meet individual learning needs
• Independence and life-skills development

Our staff team have specialist knowledge and training in autism, communication and interaction needs, sensory processing differences and inclusive teaching approaches. We work closely with families and external professionals to ensure that support is tailored to each child.

Visiting Kingfishers

We welcome visits from parents and carers who would like to find out more about our provision. Visits take place after school and provide an opportunity to see the environment and discuss how we support children with autism.

Application Process for a Kingfishers Placement

Placements within the Resource Provision are agreed through Hampshire SEN as part of the EHCP process. This typically follows the steps below:

1. Annual Review of the EHCP
   The child's current school informs the local authority if they feel they are unable to fully meet the child's needs.

2. Consultation Stage
   Hampshire SEN consults with suitable schools and specialist provisions, including any parental preferences.

3. Settings Respond
   Schools review the EHCP and indicate whether they can meet the child's identified needs.

4. Panel Discussion
   Hampshire SEN reviews all responses and discusses potential placements with specialist settings and Resource Provisions.

5. Outcome Shared
   Placement recommendations are considered by the SEN team.

6. Final Decision
   Hampshire SEN issues a placement decision and communicates any offer to parents.

7. Parent Decision
   Parents can accept or decline the placement offered.

8. Transition Planning
   If the placement is accepted, a personalised transition programme is developed to support a successful move into Kingfishers and Newlands Primary Academy.
